What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students through an emphasis on developmental growth and meaningful challenge
HPGE at our school focuses on recognising and developing each student’s unique abilities, including those who show advanced learning needs within their own developmental pathways.
Our approach includes:
• enrichment and extension experiences embedded in daily learning
• tailored support and adjustments that encourage curiosity, independence and success
• a wide range of meaningful opportunities at school and in the community that allow students to grow their potential over time.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE in the classroom, our school and beyond.
At Chalmers Road School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.
- Individual goal setting across literacy, numeracy and student voice, supporting students to grow at their own pace and celebrate their achievements.
- Specialist teachers and school staff who work collaboratively to provide targeted, high-quality learning experiences.
- Teachers identify students’ learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed practices to appropriately challenge, extend and support them.
- Ongoing professional learning ensures our staff are equipped to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with high potential and advanced learning needs.
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
- Core word charts to enhance communication and support language development.
- Physical-development activities, including on-site programs such as Minifit and swimming, as well as off-site opportunities like tennis.
- Small-group tuition and EAL/D programs to provide targeted support and extension where needed.
- Opportunities to explore and demonstrate creative talent, allowing students to develop skills and showcase their strengths.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.

- Connections and engagement with local schools to foster collaboration, social interaction and shared learning opportunities.
- Opportunities to showcase creative work, such as participation in local art exhibitions.
