What is high potential and gifted education?

Our approach includes:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE in the classroom, our school and beyond.

In our classroom

At Chalmers Road School, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is deeply embedded in our everyday teaching and learning practices. We recognise that many of our students demonstrate high potential, and we are committed to nurturing these strengths to help each student reach their fullest potential.

Our approach to supporting high potential learners is comprehensive and personalised, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive. This commitment is reflected in the following areas:

  • Individualised Goal Setting: We work closely with students and their families to establish personalised learning goals across literacy, numeracy, and student voice. This process is designed to empower students to progress at a pace that is right for them, while also celebrating their individual achievements and milestones.
  • Collaborative Expertise: Our team of specialist teachers and dedicated school staff collaborate to deliver targeted, high-quality learning experiences. Through this collective expertise, we create an enriching educational environment that challenges and extends high potential learners.
  • Evidence-Informed Teaching Practices: Teachers actively identify each student’s unique learning needs within the classroom. Using evidence-based strategies, they skilfully differentiate instruction to provide appropriate challenges, extensions, and support, ensuring that all students are engaged and motivated.
  • Ongoing Professional Development: We are committed to continuous professional learning for our staff. This includes training and development in the latest educational research and best practices for meeting the diverse needs of students with high potential and advanced learning requirements.

Through these dedicated efforts, Chalmers Road School fosters a culture of excellence and encouragement, enabling our students with high potential to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

Across our school

Individualised and Flexible Learning Opportunities

At Chalmers Road School, we recognise that every student is unique. To support this diversity, we offer a wide range of flexible and inclusive opportunities designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each learner.

Our programs include:

  • Student Voice: Students are provided with access to core word boards and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices to support their communication across the school, empowering them to express themselves effectively and participate fully in their learning community.
  • Physical Development Activities: We promote physical wellbeing through both on-site programs, such as Minifit and swimming lessons, and off-site opportunities including tennis. These activities support students’ gross and fine motor skills, coordination, and overall health.
  • Targeted Small-Group Tuition and EAL/D Support: Our small-group teaching and specialised EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) programs deliver tailored support and extension to ensure all students can access the curriculum and reach their potential.
  • Peer Links Programs: Students from local high schools visit Chalmers Road School to engage in sporting and academic activities. These visits foster social development and provide valuable academic support, helping to build connections across school communities.
  • Creative Talent Exploration: Students are encouraged to explore and showcase their creative abilities through diverse opportunities that develop skills and highlight their individual strengths in the arts and other expressive disciplines.

Through this broad and adaptable approach, Chalmers Road School provides an engaging learning environment where all students can thrive and succeed in ways that are meaningful to them.

Beyond

Extending and Enriching Student Potential through Statewide Programs

At Chalmers Road School, our students actively participate in a wide range of statewide programs designed to extend their learning and enrich their potential beyond the classroom.

Key opportunities include:

  • Collaborative Connections: We foster meaningful relationships with local schools through initiatives like Peer Links Programs and Koori Connections. These partnerships promote social interaction, collaboration, and shared learning opportunities, enhancing our students’ sense of community and belonging.
  • Sporting Opportunities: Our students benefit from specialised skills sessions and participate in competitions tailored to their individual learning and physical needs, promoting physical wellbeing and teamwork.
  • HPGE Visual Arts Program: Through collaboration with artists in residence at local schools, our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Visual Arts program nurtures creativity and artistic development, providing students with expert guidance and inspiration.
  • Showcasing Creativity: Students have multiple opportunities to display their creative talents, including participation in local art exhibitions, enabling them to celebrate and share their achievements with the wider community.

These programs reflect Chalmers Road School’s commitment to providing diverse and enriching experiences that support our students’ academic, social, and personal growth.
